Root Canal Therapy
Root canal therapy (or root canal treatment) is a dental procedure designed to save a tooth that has become severely infected or damaged. During the treatment, the dentist removes the inflamed or infected pulp, which is the soft tissue inside the tooth that contains nerves and blood vessels. After the pulp is removed, the interior of the tooth is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected to eliminate any remaining bacteria. Once the tooth is cleaned, it is filled with a special material to seal it and prevent future infection. Finally, the tooth is restored with a crown or filling to protect it and restore its normal function.
This procedure is commonly recommended when the tooth's pulp becomes damaged due to deep decay, repeated dental procedures, or trauma. Despite the common misconception, a root canal is generally no more painful than having a filling placed, and it can alleviate the severe discomfort caused by the infection. By undergoing root canal treatment, patients can avoid extraction and maintain their natural teeth, which are crucial for proper chewing, speaking, and maintaining overall dental health. With modern techniques and anesthesia, root canal treatment is a safe and effective way to preserve a tooth and relieve pain.
