Endodontic Surgery (Apicoectomy)

Endodontic surgery, or apicoectomy, is a specialized procedure aimed at addressing persistent infection following root canal treatment. When conventional root canal therapy is not sufficient to heal an infection or inflammation at the tip of the tooth's root, an apicoectomy may be recommended. During this surgery, the endodontist makes a small incision in the gum to access the root tip and surrounding bone. The infected tissue is then removed, and the root tip is cleaned and sealed with a biocompatible material. Sometimes a bone graft is also placed in the affected site. The incision is closed with sutures, and the area is allowed to heal.

This procedure is typically performed when an infection persists despite previous root canal treatment or when anatomical complexities prevent a complete cleaning of the root canal. Endodontic surgery helps to eliminate infection, alleviate pain, and preserve the natural tooth, offering a valuable option when conventional methods are not effective. With modern surgical techniques and precision, an apicoectomy can significantly improve outcomes and maintain the tooth's health and function, ensuring a successful resolution to difficult endodontic issues.
